Frequently asked questions

Your questions, our advice

How much black fondant do I need to cover a 3-tier cake?

Allow around 1 kg for a 20 cm diameter, 10 cm high cake tier. For a 3-tier cake (15/20/25 cm), plan on 2 to 3 blocks of 1 kg, depending on the overall height and desired rolling thickness (2 to 3 mm).

Does SmartFlex black stain your hands and work surface while working?

The colorant is stabilized in the fondant; slight color transfer may occur on very dry skin or a porous work surface. Wearing thin gloves and using a silicone mat helps limit this.

Can I mix this black fondant with white fondant to make gray?

Yes, by adding black a little at a time to white fondant until you reach the desired shade: it is more economical than buying dedicated gray fondant.

How can I prevent cracks on large rolled-out black surfaces?

Roll out to an even thickness of 3 mm, knead the fondant well before use to warm it, and work in a room at 18 to 22 °C.
