Renshaw Black Sugar Paste 1 kg
Intense black Renshaw fondant for contemporary cake design and graphic decorations, 1 kg.
Renshaw Black Sugar Paste 1 kg offers a deep, uniform shade obtained with a single colorant (E153), without the excessive amounts of gel coloring often needed to turn white paste black by hand.
Firm and elastic Extra-range texture: it can be worked without cracking for clean coverings and graphic finishes, highlighting gold or silver decorations in contrast.
Features
Recommended uses
- Halloween cake design: spider, bat, and witch cakes.
- Modern wedding cakes: elegant black-and-gold color schemes.
- Rock or gothic-themed birthdays: dark decorations for teens and adults.
- Base for contrasting decorations: a dark foundation that highlights metallic gold or silver colors and patterns.
- Fine modeling details: eyes, outlines, and precise lines on cake design sculptures.
Instructions
- Conditioning: remove the paste from its packaging 15 to 30 minutes before use so it reaches 18 to 22 °C.
- Kneading: knead for 1 to 2 minutes to soften it. If it remains firm, heat it in the microwave for 5 to 10 seconds.
- Rolling: dust the work surface with confectioners' sugar or cornstarch, never flour. Roll out to a thickness of 3 to 4 mm.
- Applying: place the paste over the cake, already covered with ganache or smooth, chilled buttercream, then smooth the top before the sides.
- Finishing: trim the excess with a knife or wheel cutter, then smooth once more with a fondant smoother to remove air bubbles.
Store at room temperature (15 to 22 °C), in its original airtight packaging, away from light and heat. Do not refrigerate: moisture makes the paste sweat and become sticky on the surface. Once opened, wrap the remainder in plastic wrap, place it in an airtight container, and use within 2 to 3 weeks.

Frequently asked questions
How much black sugar paste is needed for a Halloween cake?
Allow 500 g for an 18–20 cm diameter cake and 1 kg for a 25–28 cm cake. Allow an extra 20% for fine cutouts and modeling details.
Does Renshaw black stain hands or work surfaces?
A slight color transfer to the hands is possible during prolonged handling, as with any strongly colored paste: wear thin gloves if needed and clean the work surface promptly after use.
Can Renshaw black be lightened to make gray?
Yes, gradually knead black into Renshaw white rather than the other way around: this makes it easier to control the resulting shade of gray.
