Composition and difference from wafer paper
The composition of sugar sheets is very different from that of classic wafer paper (made from potato starch and water). This explains the difference in visual and tactile finish between the two media:
- Thickeners (E1422, E1412): 46%, structural base
- Maltodextrin: 14%, provides cohesion and shine
- Humectant (E422 glycerol): 11%, keeps it flexible
- Water: 9%
- Sugar: 7%, slightly sweet taste and smooth surface
- Food coloring (E170): 5%, for opaque whiteness
- Dextrose: 5%
- Stabilizers, emulsifiers, preservative, acidity regulator, flavorings
| Sugar sheet (this product) | Smooth, glossy surface, vivid colors and photographic finish, slightly sweet taste, ideal for detailed photos and logos |
| Wafer paper (other Patissland product sheets) | Potato starch and water, matte or semi-matte surface, neutral taste, ideal for airy decorations and textured veils |
Recommended uses
- Personalized birthday cakes with a photo (portrait, couple photo, pet)
- Cupcakes and cookies printed in batches for large-volume orders
- Tiered cakes and event wedding cakes: initials, date, custom designs
- Decorative plaques for corporate events, with a printed logo
- Cupcakes or cookies for family celebrations and themed birthdays
Application tips
- Always print on the matte side of the sheet, using a dedicated food printer with certified edible inks, at the highest quality (300 DPI minimum, 600 DPI for portraits)
- Let the sheet dry flat for a few minutes before handling it, to set the ink
- Apply to a dry, flat surface: recently smoothed fondant, marzipan, or dried royal icing
- Very lightly moisten the back with a brush (plain water or light syrup) just before applying it, without excess to prevent the print from running
- Place the sheet on the cake 2 to 3 hours before serving, ideally on the day of the order
Patissland tip
Storage: keep the pack in a dry, temperate place (15 to 20°C), away from direct light and moisture, and reseal the airtight packaging after each use. A sheet that has absorbed moisture becomes soft or sticky: use it quickly or replace the pack for demanding orders.

Frequently asked questions
Are sugar sheets really edible?
Yes, completely. All ingredients are authorized food additives. When eaten, the sheet quickly melts in the mouth and releases a slightly sweet taste.
Can it be printed with a regular office printer?
No. Office printers use non-edible, chemically solvent-based inks that are dangerous to consume. Always use a dedicated food printer with certified edible inks.
How many photos can be printed on an A4 sheet?
It depends on the format: one large photo for the top of a cake, 12 to 16 cupcake-size photos, 8 to 10 cookie-size photos, or up to 50 small designs per sheet by optimizing the layout.
How can I attach the sheet without soaking the print?
Very little moisture is needed: dip a food-safe brush in water, wring it out well, moisten the back of the sheet, then apply and smooth gently. If the print smudges, there was too much water.
Is it suitable for special diets?
Gluten-free and free from eggs and milk, yes. For a strict sugar-free diet, choose classic wafer paper instead. For vegan diets, check the colorants used on a case-by-case basis.
Can the sheet be cut before or after printing?
Cutting after printing is the standard method: print the entire A4 sheet, then cut with scissors or a precision knife, following the outlines of each design.
